Cake batter and swirl mix added together

Once bake and cooled, cut into three( NOT EVEN). Look closely at cut lines. The biggest piece at bottom is the bottom of sub. I didn't use the middle. The piece at top became the top of sub.

I made cake boards to match the shape of cakes. You can kind of see one on the right of picture
I used all butter buttercream to ice both parts of cakes
I stacked them together just to get an idea of what it might look like once done.
By cutting the cake into thirds left a gap when putting it together. I thought of this ahead of time and made RKT. I used rkt for meatballs and filler for back of cake as shown above.

It held the top of cake really well.
I used fondant to cover top and back all at once.
Blue straws used for support. I also covered the bottom with fondant. Next time I will cover the bottom first.

RKT MEATBALLS:  I airbrushed rkt balls brown to look like meatballs. Then mix brown, cooper, and yellow colors together and airbrushed the cake/bread.

They look just like meatballs, first try at that one.
The sauce is made from marshmallows melted with red gel color and water added to thin out.
Add some cheese/fondant and it's done!

This is really good. We eat this with out icing in my house.

How to make Piping Gel

Piping gel is often used to give cakes the glass effect such as the stain glass cakes. When you need to create water for swimming pool cake or the water for the water fall in  jungle cakes.

You can buy ready made piping gel at most cake decorating stores. The first time I needed to use it I couldn't find it at my local cake decorating store and so went in search of a recipe.

There are various recipes to make piping get. I do not know where these recipes originate or who should be credited because they are all over the internet. I found one on Cake Central and the other on ehow.com.

Note : Piping gel will never dry hard like Royal Icing. It will dry soft more like a gummy bear type. If you touch it will still be tacky.

Recipe I

I personally prefer to use this recipe though it is a bit more expensive than the second recipe. It dries better than the second recipe and I personally think the gelatin and corn syrup is tastier.

Ingredients
2 tbsp gelatine
2 tbsp water
2 cups light corn syrup
Clear flavoring - Vanilla, almond, rose....

Dissolve gelatin in the water for 2 minutes
Place in the microwave for 20 to 3o seconds or in a double boiler and melt the gelatin.
Place the corn syrup in a pan on low heat. Once the corn syrup is hot add in the gelatin mixture.
Stir well to combine. That's it - your piping gel is ready.
Let cool. Use as desired or store in the fridge for up to two months.

Recipe II

The benefit of this recipe is that it is cheap. I personally do not like the taste of strong lemon it has. It does not dry, but stays tacky unlike the first recipe with gelatin that dries soft like a gummy bear.

Ingredients
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tbsp cornstarch
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup water

Dissolve the cornstarch in 2 tbsp of water. Place the sugar, remaining water on low heat and stir until all the sugar has dissolved, Add in the lemon juice, cornstarch mixture. Stir until thick and creamy. Switch off and set aside. Once cooled use as desired.

I hope this recipe helps those that live in places where piping gel is not available in stores. In my next post I will share with you my Stain Glass cake inspired by Mondrian Art.

Until then, happy cake decorating.
